Binaytara Foundation receives approval to build cancer hospital in Nepal

Jul 2, 2024

The Binaytara Foundation is proud to announce the building design for the 200-bed cancer hospital, Binaytara Cancer Hospital & Research Center (BCHRC), in Janakpur, Nepal has been approved by the Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City. This landmark project will serve not only Nepal but also India’s State of Bihar, providing much-needed cancer care in regions that currently lack adequate treatment facilities.

The new hospital will be constructed in Janakpur, Nepal, a strategic location that addresses the absence of specialized cancer treatment in Madhesh Province, Nepal, and the deficiencies in quality healthcare access in Bihar, India. The hospital aims to deliver international-level cancer treatment services to the citizens of southern Nepal and northern India.

Dr. Binay Shah, President of the Binaytara Foundation based in Bellevue and a leader in global oncology, emphasized the foundation’s commitment to equity and excellence in healthcare: “Our goal is to build a world-class cancer hospital for underserved communities, ensuring no compromises are made. To the best of my knowledge, this is the largest global oncology hospital in the world funded by a US nonprofit organization. With the approval of the building design, we are accelerating our efforts to start construction after the monsoon season.”

The hospital’s design has been crafted by Fong & Chan Architects (FCA), a San Francisco-based architectural firm known for their expertise in hospital construction. FCA’s notable projects include the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and the California Northstate University Medical Center.

In conjunction with the hospital’s construction, the Binaytara Foundation has been actively running cancer treatment and awareness programs in Madhesh Province. Since 2018, the foundation has operated a 25-bed cancer hospital in Janakpur, Nepal, providing world-class cancer care including community education and awareness, nurse and surgeon training, chemotherapy, surgery & palliative care. The hospital also provides an ICU, laboratory and full pathology & radiology services including Janakpur’s first histopathology lab.

The foundation continues to collaborate with local NGOs on cancer awareness initiatives. Recently, a public notice invited local NGOs to partner with the foundation in spreading cancer awareness within the community.

Dr. Shah stated the foundation’s holistic approach to the project: “Our vision is to make the new 200-bed hospital a model in physical infrastructure, technological advancements, and skilled human resources. Every aspect, from the hospital’s design to its construction on approximately 2.7 hectares (4 bighas) of land, has been meticulously planned.”

The construction of the hospital is expected to stimulate economic activity, enhance health awareness, and improve treatment options in Madhesh Province. “With the passing of the design, we are one step closer to realizing our goal of establishing an international cancer hospital in Janakpur,” Dr. Shah stated.
